Independent Living Skills

Most people learn and adopt independent living skills as they grow up, usually with parents and caregivers serving as models. But for disadvantaged youth without these support systems, their ability to learn and master these skills may get inhibited. This is where Family Priority Counseling Center intends to make a difference; that is, by inculcating independent living skills among project participants, including the following:

  • Self-care and personal hygiene
  • Household maintenance, with a focus on proper cleaning and sanitary practices
  • Financial tasks, such as balancing a checkbook, paying bills promptly, saving and investing
  • Housing, including finding the right housing for one’s budget and needs
  • Transportation information and skills
  • Educational planning
  • Job search skills, resume writing, and employment conditions
  • Emergency and safety skills
  • Awareness of community resources or amenities, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics/hospitals, laundromat, banks, etc.
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Effective communication skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Proper workplace behavior, attire, and language
  • Time management, punctuality, multitasking
  • Basic legal information
  • Birth control or pregnancy prevention
  • Parenting and childcare basics

While these are all basic skills, they are necessary for program participants to master before they can take the next step toward self-sufficiency and independence.
